Info for New Stella’s Place Participants

Are you between the ages of 16 to 29 and looking for tools to support your mental health journey? You have come to the right place! We offer free mental health services for young adults living in Toronto.

Is Stella's Place Right for Me?

We support young adults living with mental and emotional health issues including but not limited to:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Self-esteem

  • Coping with trauma

  • Relationship challenges

  • Boundary setting

  • Life transitions

  • Compulsions, perfectionism and overcontrol behaviors

  • Impacts of homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, and other structural oppressions

  • Support with struggles relating to identity, sexual orientation, and gender identities

  • Mild to moderate substance use

Our Counselling Philosophies

Anti-Oppressive & Anti-Racist:

  • Understanding of the ways in which participants are harmed by systemic oppression.

  • Looking critically at how oppression occurs and is resisted between participants and clients.

  • Acknowledging the intrinsic worth of all individuals, whatever their background, preferences or situation.

Trauma Informed:

  • Acknowledging the widespread impact of trauma and the many paths to individual recovery.

  • Recognizing the signs and behaviors that are consistent with survivors of trauma and responding accordingly.

Supportive, Strengths Based and Solution Focused:

  • Acknowledging the strengths of individuals and their communities.

  • Utilizing personal strengths to find solutions to challenges participants face, instead of emphasizing limitations and weaknesses.

Self-determination Oriented:

  • Having faith that each person knows which path towards recovery is most suitable for them and their needs and to see our role as supporting them in acknowledging and increasing that capacity.

Harm Reduction Informed:

  • Utilizing practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing health issues and the social and legal consequences associated with substance use.

Hope and Recovery Oriented:

  • Acknowledging the power of hope and the positive impact that comes from a recovery approach.

Collaborative:

  • Engaging in dialogue that encourages mutual growth, learning and change for both the Participant and Clinician.

A photo of a wall in the Stella's Place café. A very bright and vibrant wooden shelf hung up on the wall has books, stuffed animals, drawings and more plastered all over.

“I really don’t think there is anywhere else like this. I can only imagine how many other young people are stuck in the darkness, trying to find help…I don’t know what I would have done without Stella’s Place, without the DBT program here, it changed my life!”
